The Optometry Admission Test (OAT) is a standardized test that you must take before you can apply to optometry school. Most students take the OAT during the winter of their sophomore year, and then again in the fall of their junior year if necessary. Students should have completed their general chemistry and general biology classes before taking the exam and should be in the process of taking anatomy and organic chemistry. Some physics background is recommended, but not always necessary, as physics is not usually taken by pre-optometry students until their third year. Many students will take the OAT several times before applying to optometry school. As of 2007, applicants are allowed to take the OAT once every three months. The OAT is available year round.
The test is made up of four sections: reading, physics, quantitative reasoning, and a survey of sciences. The science section is divided into biology, general chemistry, and organic chemistry. The test very similar to the Dentistry Admission Test. Only physics is added, replacing the reasoning portion on the Dental Exam.
